For days I have been reflecting on how to correctly approach this publication. I have done mental juggling to channel my ideas and I have finally reached a conclusion after finishing the new story of Skyline Valley in Fallout 76. I have chosen to take the shortest path: the straight line, telling what I experienced without resorting to nostalgia or frustration.
The update Skyline Valley arrived last June 12 and brought with it something historic for Fallout 76: the first map expansion. I already said that I was able to try it at the PTS and more recently I told what my first hours of adventures were like. The conclusion was clear: Bethesda, this is the way. And although I stand by what I said, I have to readjust some sentences.
This is the way, but not this way
I couldn't have had worse luck. The same day I published the article about how my first adventures of Skyline ValleyI returned to Fallout 76 to continue with the story. Now free to pay attention to record and take screenshots for a publication. In other words, enjoy without worrying about anything.
I was doing the System Engine quest, which requires getting rare mushroom variants for a serum. Everything went well during the previous session, but when my character returned he suffered from a state of paranoia: he heard noises, women's laughter and had hallucinations. Monsters like Deathclaws and Mothman (Shadow) would appear and fade when hit, but stun you when they disappear, causing a very annoying animation.
It didn't matter where it was. I even tried traveling to the other end of the map. I had no choice but to move forward carrying this task. Hallucinations appeared literally every two seconds and were added to the cave's own enemies. It was a very unpleasant experience. And you might think it's because of the mushrooms, but I had to endure this effect for 10-20 minutes extra to the mission. I had to take off my helmet when I finished because it was going to drive me crazy.
I looked for references on Reddit and the Steam meeting points, and indeed it is a bug of Fallout 76: Skyline Valley. I came out on top! Some players have the mission even more broken and are unable to inoculate the serums (made from the mushrooms) to the test subjects to advance the story. And many players are still there today.
My luck ran out soon because Fallout 76 He stopped giving me missions after returning to Vault 63 and continuing with the mission Between the Lines, which asks you to go to the Meteorology sector. I did a couple of assignments (Spy Game) and all the expansion missions disappeared from my Pip-Boy. It was impossible for the story to end like this. It couldn't be that bad. I tried all of Bethesda's recommendations: reinstall, delete console files, restart session… I got angry and closed the game.
The next afternoon I returned with a mixture of frustration and the desire to play to finish exploring all the new locations. I found a couple of cool places, some secrets, and a perfect location for my second CAMP, but I was still very angry about what was happening. Meanwhile, I had several trusted streamers (Malevolgia, Oskar1up and others) on the secondary screen pointing out the same or similar problems.
After doing a little research, I found the community crying out loud for Skyline Valley. Steam user KraatheCrow perfectly summarizes all the problems that players have been encountering: errors when interacting with intercoms, when delivering the Omega Serum and when recording dead enemies, the Shadow scroll, missions blocked or not delivered , repeated crashes (especially on PSN) and the occasional minor bug.
I spent several days gathering data, talking to players about these issues, and going into Fallout 76 to check if my problem had been solved… even if by magic. Several veterans told me that the mission-related bugs were not in PTS and that they did not understand what had happened in the final version. I can't help but wonder the same thing.
Yesterday I logged in again and the miracle happened: the next mission appeared on the screen as if nothing had ever happened. I finished the little story I had left in 50-60 minutes, without all the interest I would have liked. Not because it's bad. It is true that it is short, but also interesting. Rather it was because he was completely out after a mistake that lasted several days. It was like a kick in the chest took me out of the experience. I didn't come back the same.
My intention is not to add fuel to the fire of hatred Fallout 76, Rather the complete opposite. However, she felt the responsibility to tell what the other side of the coin is like. I still believe in my heart that Skyline Valley It's a great update and it should be the way to go, but not in this way. It has managed to disappoint many players despite being the best thing that has happened to the game in years. I understand all the fans who are tired of disappointments after so many years of trust.
