It is more than likely that a movie based on Grand Theft Auto or Red Dead Redemption would become a huge hit. Any member of Rockstar Games I would approve the project, but Dan Houser, former director and co-founder of the studio, thought exactly the opposite.
During an interview with The Ankler, the current member of Absurd Ventures talked about the possibility of a film production of both franchises. According to his words, “it never made sense” to carry out that task and that was not precisely the position of the executives who put the idea on the table.
“After some awkward meetings, we asked them [a los ejecutivos], why would we do this?“explains Houser, who reports that the bosses responded that they were faced with the opportunity to create a film. However, the creative made his position on the matter clear.
“No, what you described is that you make a movie and we have no control and we take a big risk that we will end up paying for something that belongs to us. They thought we would be dazzled by the lights and that was not the case. We had what we considered a billion-dollar intellectual property, and the economics never made sense. The risk never made sense in those days, the perception was that games translated into poor quality movies.”
Of course, Dan himself has clarified that “now are different times”, so perhaps there is hope at the end of the road. This is not the first time that one of the Houser brothers has spoken out about being able to see a film about GTA either Red Dead Redemption.
Sam Houser has confessed that Eminem was going to be the lead in a production with a budget of five million dollars, but he turned it down. On the other hand, Take-Two itself has clarified that there is a very big risk when it comes to shaping the work.
