- Warning: spoilers for Episode 5 of The Acolyte.
Episode 1×05 of Star Wars: The Acolyte was an incredible experience in terms of action scenes. The Dark Side user or Sith finally showed his face and turned out to be Qimir, also known as The Master or The Stranger, and gave a real lesson in power to Master Sol, Yord Fandar, Jecki Lon and the rest of the Jedi who accompanied the group in search of Kelnacca.
His attire did not go unnoticed by anyone: a black tunic with bare arms, a helmet with a macabre smile and a metal bracer and finally the characteristic red sword of the Sith. Not only did he prove to be a great swordsman and have great control of the force, enough to put such a large group of Jedi in check, he also hinted that he is smarter than he appears.
During the fight, we see him use his helmet and wrist guard to stop/hit the Jedi's lightsabers, causing them to temporarily shut down. The effect fits nicely into the choreography. However, many fans were wondering: what metal is that? It certainly didn't look like Beskar, the metal used by the Mandalorians.
It's a material called cortosis. It's very rare—I've heard of it, but never seen it. It's rumored to have extraordinarily high energy absorption and transmission coefficients, so much so that many energy weapon blasts are dissipated by its fibers without causing any damage. – Grand Admiral Thrawn
He Cortosis is within the Star Wars canon. It first appeared in the novel A New Awakening (2014). It is one of the hardest minerals in the galaxy and after being refined it becomes a metal with “a very high energy absorption rate and transmission coefficients.” It can withstand blaster shots and lightsaber attacks, even disabling the latter. However, it does not have much resistance and breaks when subjected to fire or prolonged blows, hence the Sith's helmet ends up giving way quickly.
