- Warning: Deadpool and Wolverine spoilers
The Deadpool and Wolverine movie takes the loudmouth mercenary on a multiversal journey in search of a version of Logan to save his universe. What seemed like it was going to be a desperate search ends up being a series of references to Marvel comics… although things get so out of hand that there is a few digs at DC.
Who are the different versions of Wolverine? Most of them are from the comics, although the movie reserves a couple to make jokes about the character. We are referring to the short version of Wolverine and Cavilezno. The first case is Marvel laughing at itself. Many fans do not know that Wolverine is very short, not taller than 160 centimeters, compared to the 180 centimeters that Jackman's version measures.
Henry Cavill's version is another realization of an idea. It turns out that many people believe the character would suit the actor perfectly, especially after seeing the action scenes in The Witcher series. The film once again proves that Cavill can pull off almost anything: Superman, Geralt, Wolverine… Now, let's move on to the comic-inspired versions.
Wolverine with eye patch
This is one of the most striking versions of the film. Many fans believed that this was a version in which Logan was a mob boss or something similar. While the idea is great, it is a bit far from what actually happens in the comics.
The eye-patched version of Wolverine originates from the comic book series Wolverine: Patch. In this adventure, Logan went to live for a while in Madripoor, an island located in Southeast Asia. The story in the comics tells that it is an infiltration operation, although in the film he does not hide it much when he brings out his claws. His comings and goings from the city date back to 1988.
Wolverine of the forest
If there is a version of Wolverine in Deadpool and Wolverine that is only suitable for true veterans, this is undoubtedly it. Many fans did not even recognize the peculiar suit and took the scene as a small cameo by Hulk, who we have not seen much of since Endgame. However, it goes much deeper.
This scene is directly inspired by the character's first appearance in Marvel Comics during The Incredible Hulk #180, hence the costume based on John Byrne's version. As for the little detail of Hulk's reflection in the claws, it's a sublime nod to the cover of Todd Macfarlane's The Incredible Hulk #340 comic. Wolverine and Hulk faced off in both issues.
Wolverine with an 80s vibe
Anyone who doesn't know Marvel comics must have thought that Deadpool had found an 80s version of Wolverine and that he could start dancing at any moment. Nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, he found one of the worst versions of the character. Yes, worse than the final one.
This maned Wolverine originates from the comic book series that begins with X-Men: Alpha #1, known as Age of Apocalypse. We end up seeing a post-apocalyptic world due to the confrontation of a resistance of X-Men mutants against Apocalypse. Wolverine ends up losing a hand and joining the villain. In fact, one of his aliases in this story is The Heir of Apocalypse.
Wolverine crucified
We've already dedicated a post to this sad and murky version of Wolverine. Here's a summary so as not to repeat ourselves too much: the image of Logan nailed to a cross is inspired by the cover of the comic Uncanny X-Men #251. Although the setting is slightly different in the film, it captures the character's agony very well.
In this story, Logan is crucified in the sun and tortured to a death that never comes due to his regenerative powers. Throughout the ordeal, he has visions of his former X-Men teammates and other personalities that torture his mind. Finally, a storm gives him the strength to break free.
Redneck Wolverine
Many people thought this version was just to poke fun at the American stereotype, but they were completely wrong. It was the best reference to other Wolverines in the entire movie. His name isn't Redneck Wolverine, but Old Man Logan, ring a bell?
Old Man Logan belongs to a must-read comic series for any Marvel fan and the character. This story inspired the 2017 film Logan and now the 2018 version of the film. Deadpool and Wolverine. In fact, the latter is a much more faithful version of what we can see in the comic strips. If you have the chance, take a look at it without hesitation.
