Yes, a new simulator. Yes, one more to join the list of hundreds. Autopsy Simulator, by Woodland Games, tries to stand out with a proposal that combines terror and forensic realism, but, unfortunately, it fails to meet expectations. In the following note I will tell you the reasons.
Autopsy Simulator is available for PC.
Anatomy of an empty body
The plot follows Jack, a middle-aged pathologist who has seen his life fall apart. Formerly a respected professional in his field, he now finds himself in a state of desolation, dragging himself day by day through his routine.
Although the game tries to add a layer of emotional depth with the protagonist's personal story, the result is clumsy and predictable. The developers tried to give more depth to a “simulator” by emphasizing the narrative – I highlight their effort to offer something more – but they ended up falling into commonplaces and clichés that make the story unattractive.
As the plot progresses, it becomes even more apparent that it is superficial and poorly executed.
The narrative feels forced and the emotional connections that should be formed with the protagonist simply fail to materialize. Attempts to delve deeper into the main character's psychology fall short, causing the reader to quickly lose interest.
Dissecting the monotony
The gameplay is centered around performing hyper-realistic autopsies and manipulating human organs interactively. At first glance, this may sound intriguing, but it quickly becomes repetitive and lacks spark.
The game demands attention to detail and an analytical approach, but the lack of pace and dynamism makes for a tedious experience.
The dissection and analysis tasks, which should be exciting, feel like a monotonous routine with no highlights.
The attempt to create a realistic simulation of autopsies falls short due to the lack of variety in the activities. The tools and procedures, while initially interesting, become predictable and boring after a few sessions.
The game fails to offer progressive challenges or elements that keep the player interested over the long term. Additionally, the gameplay mechanics lack fluidity, which adds an additional layer of frustration to the experience.
One good thing and one bad thing
The graphics are perhaps one of the few bright spots in the game. Body models and fabric textures are detailed, and the muted color palette creates a suitably scary atmosphere. The realistic graphics contribute to an initial sense of immersion, but they fail to sustain the experience on their own.
The sound design, however, leaves a lot to be desired. While it includes some creepy effects, the soundtrack is generic and fails to stand out. It adds nothing memorable to the experience and feels like a background accompaniment that fails to enhance the game's grim atmosphere. The sound effects, which could have been a crucial element in heightening the tension, are rather lackluster and forgettable.
- Realistic graphics that achieve deep immersion.
- Wide variety of forensic tools available.
- Monotonous gameplay that becomes repetitive quickly.
- Predictable story that fails to connect emotionally.
- Lackluster sound design that doesn't complement the atmosphere.
