The creators of the video game saga of The Witcher and Cyberpunk 2077 reaffirm their independence: the rumored announcement of the acquisition of CD Project by Sony and its integration into PlayStation Studios have been completely denied by Adam KicinskiCEO of the company.
The context, in fact, gave rise to addressing the issue and settling it: during the last meeting of the group and presentation of the financial report for the first quarter of 2023, one of the attendees asked Kiciński about the position of CD Projekt vis-à-vis the possibility of purchase by Sony (partly encouraged by Microsoft’s moves). For his part, and according to VGC, the CEO has been concise when responding.
Nothing has changed on our part. What’s more, I stand by what we’ve been saying over the years: CD Projekt is not for sale.
We want to remain independent. We have, I think, an excellent strategy. It is not easy to execute, of course, but following our own path is what we are passionate about. So [la compra por parte de Sony] it’s just a rumour.
Although taking shelter from large companies makes them less dependent on direct sales of their own projects, it must be admitted that the Poles are not lacking in reasons: the arrival of Geralt de Rivia to new generation systems have translated into what The Witcher 3 has passed the barrier of 50 million copies sold.
A milestone to which another major one is added: the figures for the entire franchise are established at 75 million units distributed worldwide. And beware, there are more games based on the universe of Andrzej Sapkowski in the oven.
The PlayStation strategy is gradually evolving and adapting to changing times. In the short term we will continue to enjoy the single-player experiences of the house and Bungie, the creators of Destiny, is advising the Sony teams to adapt their own franchises and sagas to games as a service.
In any case, and despite the fact that both The Witcher 3 as cyberpunk 2077 They arrived with well-known problems (especially the second one) the effort to offer role with capital letters has translated into good figures capable of maintaining the current and future projects of one of the most important studies in Europe.
A situation that allows them to approach the games without depending on third parties and with which Adam Kiciński and his colleagues from CD Project find themselves much more comfortable, more creative, and which, apparently, they are interested in maintaining.
