Years will pass and new and great animation studios will be born, but none will be able to surpass the magic of Studio Ghibli. The Japanese company has managed to create something unique in the industry and, with each film they release, Miyazaki's legacy grows even more. However, working on this type of project also has its peculiarities.
In an interview with Yahoo! Japan, the son of the legendary director, Goro Miyazakitalked about the particularities of his father, Hayao Miyazaki, when he begins a project (in this case his next film) and why he is quite conservative with the material he releases before the film's release.
“He won't tell anyone. He will never tell it. Even at that age, all the animators around him are his rivals, whether they are younger than him, the staff who support him, whether they are inside or outside the company.”
According to Goro Miyazaki, it seems that his father considers competitiveness between studios an important factor and, therefore, wants to avoid at all costs that any details leak outside the company so that no other company can take his ideas. The clearest example was his latest film, The Boy and the Heron, for which only a poster was released before its release in Japan.
Of course, this methodology is effective in preventing other authors from “stealing” ideas, but it is also true that it is risky. Although Ghibli is a very reputable studio, these types of strategies might not work as well in studios with less prestige. Likewise, we hope that Miyazaki's next film will once again surprise everyone thanks to its technical power and magical narrative.
