In the middle of 2023, a former developer tells us that Anthem was created in 15 months, being this a derisory time to create a game with the scope and ambition that was promised from Electronic Arts and Bioware. One look at all the commercial material that was being presented about Anthem and how incredible its MMORPG experience would be, there was no doubt: this would be EA’s Destiny, a service that would endure over time with new content gradually.
The game had a pre-launch full of hype, with the material shown by the publisher at E3 which only left us wanting to try the new proposal from Bioware, a developer that is much loved and valued by both players and the press. With fewer than 2,500 players on the Xbox system just a couple of months after its release, the game never quite got its head around.
Anthem was created in 15 months, a record time that inevitably invites failure
On Twitter, some developers began to talk about their work in the industry, specifically, in those jobs that did not go quite well. It seems that within the developer community, Metacritic is very important, since they used the weighted press release as a gauge of his work. They always stressed that there was no such thing as fruitless work, that creating games is difficult.
I learned a lot on this project. We knew it wasn’t ready, as this game was literally created in 15 months. Which is unheard of for a game that scope. Anthem 2 would have been great! https://t.co/HHK29rpVbr pic.twitter.com/JJkpUf9DqX

Was the user Ian Saterdalen who referred to his work in Anthem and did not hesitate to emphasize that, despite the brief 15 month time to work on the video game, his time on the project was one that he will remember very fondly. Furthermore, he added that, due to the experience gained by the development team and if they had the time, a sequel would have been a great game.

In fact, many will remember that there were plans to revive the project through Anthem Next, but this attempt was undermined irrevocably in 2021. This was because all of Bioware’s resources had to be diverted to the Mass Effect and Dragon Age projects, which are still in development to this day. It seems unlikely that we will see the return of Anthem, since although this project was born with the best ideas and intentions, this does not seem to be an incentive for the responsible publisher.
