The board is already studying simulating traditional television in territories where the model still predominates
While is true that Netflix was founded in 1997 by Reed Hastings and Marc Randolph as a DVD-by-mail rental service, the brand became the pioneering streaming platform back in 2007now being the queen of the market that has changed the way we watch television by having reached the entire world, registering more than 230 million subscribers.
Series like Stranger Things, The Crown or the Spanish La Casa de Papel have gone around the world and, although they have established Netflix as the leader in the production and distribution of digital contentthe platform is studying how to evolve after last year it established a cheaper plan with advertising and limited the way of sharing accounts.
Now that the streaming war has heated up with competitors like Disney+ or Amazon Prime Video, the streaming giant is exploring the possibility of offering a free plan with ads similar to Spotify, which would increase its audience significantly. This is revealed by Bloomberg, which explains that there are still no concrete plans to implement it, although the debate is already on the table of the company's directors.
Specific territories in Europe and Asia would be eligible for a free, ad-laden Netflix plan after the streaming platform's cheapest plan has ended up catching on with many subscribers, allowing access to a large library of series, films, programs and documentaries while showing advertisements.
Netflix was already free in the past
It should be remembered that Netflix has already tried its luck as a free service in Kenya, where the test was stopped after a year. Now, the streaming platform would repeat the strategy in markets where traditional television channels still dominateseeking to emulate its model with periodic announcements. Clearly, the United States is far from being able to benefit from the proposal.
While Netflix's management decides whether to implement a free plan, the platform continues to add all kinds of titles, with rumors now circulating about a remake of The Squid Game.
