One of the biggest problems facing games-as-a-service like Helldivers 2, Diablo IV, and Fallout 76 is that they receive updates on an almost weekly basis, which means there's a huge chance of upsetting a lot of people and/or breaking something in-game. Arrowhead's recent weapon swings, for example, haven't been well received one bit.
The changes made by the Escalation of Freedom update have prompted many players to ask if Helldivers 2 will have a test server to test the changes before they reach the final game, this way they can give feedback and “avoid a lot of these problems,” as @ReddingWilson points out on Twitter.
The person responsible for answering this question has been Shams Jorjani, CEO of Arrowhead Game Studio, who has offered a brief but hopeful answer: “Yes, it is on the wish list” or the list of things to do. That is to say, the test server is something that is part of the studio's plans. This news has been well received by fans.
A video game's Test Server is not only used to play what's coming in advance, as we did with Fallout 76's Skyline Valley, it also serves to detect errors, receive feedback on balance and test different changes. Iconic games like World of Warcraft have their own servers and Blizzard added this in Diablo IV with great success. There is no doubt that Helldivers 2 needs them urgently.
