With the recent release of High on Lifeon December 13, 2022, for Microsoft Windows, Xbox One and Xbox Series X | S platforms, it is logical that fans are very excited for all the discoveries they can make about the first-person shooter video game.
Of course, one of the peculiarities of the game developed by Squanch Games has been his penchant for comedy. Although this resource is widely used by other games in its genre, it is not usually the focal point of the titles, as High on Life does. Therefore, players have been attentive to that, although, of course, in the case of a shooter, fans usually expect more than laughter during their experience.
So far it should be remembered that justin roilandone of the creators of Rick and Morty was involved in the project, so it is likely that we already know where the game is going to take us. Although Squanch Games has also taken its share, since the developer has had an influence on other installments of the same shot, so it is not surprising that this latest game corresponds to the company’s track record.
Furthermore, judging by the high of life walkthrough, full of funny situations, already gives us an account of what we will be able to see throughout the game; many of the jokes we saw in the animation are present in the title, to which were added several references that actually bring a more diverse concept to the shooter.
In fact, the premise is quite related to the theme of Rick and Morty, since the character you will play will be a teenager who is forced to face a fearsome organization of aliens that seeks to enslave humanity with the aim of extracting a psychoactive substance. Thus, many of them are armed to fulfill their mission (although far from being scary they are funny) and their personalities are quite cartoonish.
In the same way as Roiland’s animation, High on Life tackles a situation that should be “serious”, but brings us a few smiles in the process. The design is very striking and tends to be loaded with vibrant colors that will turn the game into a rather curious experience. Nevertheless, the amount of enemies is certainly reduced and the player will have to complete missions and explore the world to face the bosses.
So this is where it all gets interesting, since combat is challenging and players will have to overcome various challenges as they progress on the map.
The pop culture references in High on Life
Now that you know the most important features of the latest installment of Squanch Games, you might be wondering how many references and jokes you can find in the game, given its nature. Although this is something that is not known for sure due to the short time that High on Life has been on the market, many very observant players They already noticed some of them.
For example, one of the most obvious is Fallout. But, despite the fact that the Bethesda role-playing game is well known by the same gaming community, there was something that caught the attention of a fan because it is one of the most popular American series on drugs and action.
In case you don’t figure out which one it is yet, we are talking about breaking bada famous series that closely follows the story of Walther White, a chemistry professor who, faced with an unexpected lung cancer, gets involved in the world of cartels to “cook” methamphetamine and thus raise enough money to guarantee the estate of his family after his departure.
The iconic pizza scene
The Breaking Bad reference Found by a High on Life fan is an epic scene in which Walter White angrily throws a pizza off the roof of his house. And its popularity has become so widespread that it is not surprising to see it also in the new title from Squanch Games. This was what the player found:
As you can see, “someone” will have thrown a pizza on the roof in the same way as the scientist as a tribute. Until now is the only reference we have about the series, but it is very likely that, given the nature of the game, we will continue to find more.
