Bungie has made some decisions that have hurt the gaming community throughout Destiny's history. Removing the base campaign and several paid DLCs was one of them, but it didn't hurt half of what they prepared for September 4, 2018.
The Forsaken or Forsaken expansion of Destiny 2 was the most painful stab that all of us Guardians have received. I clearly remember arriving at the Prison of the Ancients with Cayde-6, leader of the Hunter Vanguard and one of our best friends, to quell a mutiny. At the time, I was a hunter and I couldn't even imagine what was going to happen, even after seeing the opening cinematic I refused to believe it.
Destiny 2: six years of mourning and one last battle against the end of everything
There we were: two heroes of the Vanguard ready to solve Petra Venj's problem in the Prison of the Ancients. The mission progressed as usual with Cayde-6: full of jokes, shootings, explosions and pure improvisation. So much so that the exo ended up jumping into the deepest hole of the prison to reach the bottom and capture Uldren Sov.

What he found in the depths of the prison was his death at the hand of Uldren Sov and his Forsaken. He didn't end up lying on the ground and disarmed without a fight, of course, he starred in one of the most epic cinematics of Destiny 2 till the date. But Cayde didn't have the best cards and he ended up dying permanently from a bullet from his own weapon, the Ace of Spades.
Sov let Cayde live just long enough to hear a couple more jokes before the light in his exo eyes was extinguished forever. “Tell Zavala and Ikora that the vanguard is the best bet I've ever lost.” Those were her last words. I remember crying my eyes out for several minutes.
The trauma was such that our character spoke for the first time in Destiny 2 to say: “Uldren Sov is mine.” What came next was a wave of violence and revenge that ended with Sov lying on the ground and taking a bullet from the Ace of Spades. It was a temporary comfort. Many players, including myself, have spent six years mourning his death and several of those years living with his killer, who came back to life as a guardian and under the name Cuervo.

Destiny 2's Final Form has brought back Cayde-6, thanks to Raven's wish upon first entering the Faint Heart of the Traveler. I found him playing the harmonica in the old Vanguard Tower, the same one Ghoul destroyed during the Red War. Both the structure and the exo were the same as he remembered them.
His return still seemed like a cowardly move by Bungie to me. He hates resurrections. I like when authors have the courage to kill their characters knowing that there is no turning back. But… it's Cayde-6. How could he not rejoice at the reunion with an old friend? How could he not do so after six years of feeling his absence? I admit that I didn't hold back the couple of tears that fell down my cheek as I listened to his story.

Destiny 2 It makes you feel like one more by taking a few minutes to savor the reunion with Cayde-6, but you can also see the reunions with Ikora and Zavala, his squadmates. I don't want to go into too much detail because I already did recently, but it is heartbreaking to see how the sorceress and the titan are reunited with their friend. You can hear their hearts crack.
“Don't be too smart, you still have a lot to make up for” and “I don't know how you came back, but…”, Ikora and Zavala respectively say to Cayde before giving him a hug. Added to all this accumulation of emotions is Cuervo, who feels enormous shame for his past and a lot of insecurity for not living up to his predecessor, whom he killed as Sov.

Fighting The Final Form of the Witness alongside Cayde-6 is being an incredible experience. Not only because of his sparkling humor, but because no one has had the courage to be with him during his absence: transgressive, daring and with just the right touch of evil so that no one touches his morals. La Vanguardia has been lurching and saving the situation at the last moment due to the absence of command.
Still, I wasn't about to change my mind about Bungie's cowardice… until an eye-opening scene that I think is the most revealing of the entire story in this regard. The group sits around a bonfire after reuniting with Zavala and Raven updates Cayde-6 on Amanda Holliday's death. The hunter could hardly finish the story and Ikora said that she was tired of burying friends. The exo responds with the keywords:
But in life you have to know how to say goodbye. Well… I died. You cried. I was at peace and now… I'm back to open old wounds and rub salt into them. In the end, you have to say goodbye.

I have no doubt that it is the most beautiful scene in Destiny 2 and, forgive me if I'm swinging, I think her return makes perfect sense when you listen to it. I don't think Cayde-6's return is definitive. Maybe I'm wrong because I have more story left to see, but I've come to the conclusion that Bungie brought him back to give us a chance to say goodbye. He has been our Virgil in The Final Form.
I am convinced that Cayde-6's return is deeper than I imagined, that there is room for more than cowardice. I want to believe that our old friend has been granted extra time so that all of us players who have been mulling over his death for years can finally choose how to say goodbye, especially since the Forsaken campaign is not available.

The Final Form of Destiny 2 It is being incredible and I hope to soon find a group of guardians to accompany them to the raid, finally face the witness and know how this Age of Light and Darkness definitively ends. In the meantime, I will continue to enjoy the presence of my old friend Cayde-6. He has taken up residence in the Tower of the Faint Heart and has given Raven his blessing to become the new leader of the Hunter Vanguard. He is just as stupid, but much wiser.
