The bet of Sony towards games as a service and multiplayer titles took place Naughty Dog one of its greatest exponents. The company behind The Last of Us put a lot of effort into an online project that ultimately never saw the light of day, as the Japanese company decided to cancel it.
The idea behind the work was to share space with other users while we tried survive in a post-apocalyptic worldbased entirely on the IP of Joel and Ellie. However, we would adopt the role of survivors outside the main line, being able to experience confrontations and visit areas not explored in the two previous installments.
During the Friends Per Second podcast, journalist Jason Schreier has revealed some more details about what really happened with the online mode of The Last of UsAccording to their sources, the game was in development for four years, which is not a bad amount of time to throw it out at the first opportunity.
Obviously, hundreds of people were involved in the title, trying to shape the adventure, but the final cancellation was a hard blow.It was not a bloodless ending“, says Schreier, who makes it clear that Sony invested a lot and the consequences were felt by the brand, as “heads rolled” after his departure.
It doesn't look like Naughty Dog will be bringing back the online format, so right now it remains focused on single-player titles that are still unknown to us.
