The trajectory of Cyberpunk 2077 has not been easy. Its launch at the end of 2020 came amid fierce criticism for the poor state of the game, especially on consoles. However, with the passage of time CD Projekt has managed to rebuild itself and offer the experience you always had in mindincluding a magnificent expansion like Phantom Liberty.
Although at first glance Cyberpunk 2077 is an action RPG set in a futuristic and decadent world, it hides much more than it seems. Now the person responsible for the work has explained the true background of the story in a talk with the portal PC Gamerwhere he began by saying that, indeed, Cyberpunk 2077 “is about terminal illnesses” and the way in which each person faces them.
Much more than an action RPG
These have been the words of the lead mission designer Pawel Sasko when asked about the background on terminal illnesses that Cyberpunk 2077 exudes from beginning to end (be careful, spoilers from the main game and the Phantom Liberty expansion):
“It's about terminal illnesses and how to deal with them. How am I going to spend these last six months? Am I going to become a legend and drown in luxury cars and all those material things or am I going to put it into a relationship and actually be with people? When they started the game, many thought or felt that yes, this is going to be a GTA. And then this scary thing that was always there appears, slowly acting up and making you realize it. Some players didn't understand it, others did. Those who did it were deeply moved.”
Sasko has also delved into how people felt when they saw that there was no hope and how that sand “corrected” with one of the endings of Phantom Libertybut at a high cost:
“Cyberpunk is about you, as a player, discovering this mess for yourself. There were a lot of people whose discovery was 'you just want more cars, drown in material goods.' That's it, that's how I live my life.' When the players were like 'what decisions am I making? If I can't save myself, what kind of RPG is this? It's about finding the answer. What is your response to a terminal illness?
There is a way to survive, but the price you pay is a two-year coma, you wake up, everything is different. You pay the highest price with relationships with all of those people. You've lost almost everything. But you have survived and that is the opportunity we wanted to offer. In some ways it is a little more hopeful, but the price is very high.”

Cyberpunk 2077 released the brilliant Phantom Liberty expansion last year and got great recognition for it. It also marked the end of the history of this video game, while CD Projekt has already begun the pre-production of its sequel. However, the Polish company's next project is the start of the new trilogy of The Witcher.
