The future smiles fully on James Gunn, as the film director is in a privileged position as DC Studios boss. The Flash and Superman: Legacy will set the tone for the reboot of the cinematic universe, but fortune has not always smiled on the artist.
It was in 2018 when Disney decided to fire Gunn for some tweets made between 2008 and 2009 in which he joked about pedophilia and rape. That happened in the middle of the process of creating Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and the director has addressed the issue in the Inside of You podcast, as collected from Comicbook.
“For a while it was like, ‘Shit. I’ve been working my whole life to be loved by all these people, by the world, so I can feel good about myself. And everything I’ve worked for is gone.’ At that point I thought I was going to have to sell my house and move, that my career was completely over, and for a brief moment, it was.
Then I started trying to take care of myself, to do the best I could. But what was so amazing to me was that in that moment of lowliness, when I couldn’t help anyone, that’s when people came to me and showed me the greatest love. People like you [el presentador Michael Rosenbaum]especially my future wife, Jen [Holland], my family, my mother and my father. You know, Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, Pom Klementieff, all the Guardians. zoe [Saldaña] coming home and making me dinner. Sylvester Stallone. The number of people who showed me their love at a time when I was completely weak.”
Gunn hit rock bottom emotionally and he thought no one else would ever want to hire him again. However, that experience was completely revealing for him and gave him new energy to continue.
“It was amazing for me, and I felt that for the first time in my life I felt loved. And then what I had been looking for all my life, to feel loved by something outside of myself, to feel good, I could not experience it until I let go of my desperation to receive it. That’s when I felt really good.”
A few months after his departure from Marvel, DC rushed to hire him to direct The Suicide Squad, a film that received critical and public acclaim. Finally, one’s own Disney backed down from its decision. and offered him the position he had lost at the head of the team led by Star Lord.
