Several days have passed since Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was released in theaters around the world. As expected, the third and last film by James Gunn in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has made us shed more than one tear for his emotional outcome. However, this event was about to not exist due to the Gunn’s removal by Disney several years ago as a result of a controversy with several old tweets of which he has already reiterated without regret.
The director’s anger with Disney was monumental and he was about to not accept the reconciliation, but there was something (or rather, someone) that helped him reconsider his decision: Rocket Raccoon. Through an interview with The New York Times, Gunn talked about how he had a thorn in himself for not being able to develop Rocket’s character, something he was finally able to do in this third installment.
“Everyone knows I was away for a while, then I came back, and the reason I came back – because, frankly, I wouldn’t have if it wasn’t for this – is that I needed to tell the story of Rocket. I couldn’t have that in me. from me and not express it. I have a strange connection to that character, I feel like he deserves everything. This is the story of a character who goes from being a smuggling petty thief to becoming the leader of the greatest team the universe has ever known. And his backstory, the pain of his origin, all the seeds I dropped in the first part when Peter Quill sees the wounds on his back, all of those things were leading to something, and I felt stunted cutting him there. if I was making all of that and didn’t finish it. It was a hard pill for me to swallow.”
James Gunn has reiterated several times that he feels very identified with Rocket Racoon. The director has also commented in this interview that his personal journey It is similar to that of the raccoon, since both have accepted themselves as they are and have learned to gradually receive the love of others.
He himself has left clues about Rocket’s past in previous installments, revealing injuries on his back and certain attitudes that led him to a rather traumatic origin. That is why, regardless of the other guardians, Gunn he had the need to tell the origin of one of his most beloved characters and make sense of his attitude within the saga. We do not know if we will see again rocket in the future, but we are sure that you will always have a place in our hearts.
