Larian Studios has packed Baldur's Gate 3 with tons of content to discover, and it's a testament to the Belgian developer's brutal dedication. Similarly, the character animations in the game are Fantasy RPG They are brutal, all thanks to Mustapha El Bachiri.
We're talking about one of the actors and choreographers who was involved in motion capture for the animators and the studio has shared a video in which he explains how some of the combat arts came about. Each character is uniquewith their own style, look and character. Our challenge was to find a way to make them look authentic and make their movements their own,” explains El Bachiri.
“When starting a new sequence, I have a lot of creative freedom. The animation director often asks me to explore natural movements, so I'll start experimenting with my own body. Sometimes I'll try a lot of options before I find the right one,” says the director, who goes on to delve deeper into Githyanki swordsmanship. Lae'zel is one of the main companions in the adventure through the Forgotten Realms and his method of fighting is very special.
According to El Bachiri, “with the Githyanki, for example, we began to be inspired by the eastern martial arts of the samurai,” so they took the reference from an ancient fighter. He does not reveal his identity, but indicates that a samurai master dreamed of a very specific movement.
“It was in a vision or in a dream. He was fighting a very difficult opponent. And he couldn't defeat him. And he came up with this final, failed move. “In which he had to avoid his opponent and he did not have to show his sword or his intentions,” says El Bachiri, while showing a pose that does not allow the sword to be seen if one looks at the opponent from the front.
That same pose is performed by Lae'zel in Baldur's Gate 3which consists of resting the blade on the inside of the elbow and positioning the other part of the body to hide one's intentions with the sword. Of course, the title still has many curiosities to exploit.
