It looks like we’re starting to see the first hints of a new Mario.
The most astute will have noticed that in the last Nintendo Direct that was broadcast at the beginning of this month something happened that very few would imagine, since, to the surprise of many, no new Mario game announcedwith its participation being the launch of a new batch of extra tracks through the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe expansion pass, which has been announced for a year.
Be that as it may, it seems that, to date, the only thing we will have from this famous Nintendo IP is the Super Mario movie and all the nods that we would see in it from the plumber video games, so that, despite the lack of an official confirmation, it is expected that a new title is released sometime in the year to take advantage of the promotion of the movie, this being something very common in cases like Uncharted, Sonic and The Last of Us, where shortly after launching the movies and series (or even before), they were launched franchise titles.
Miyamoto reveals that Nintendo is always developing new Mario titles
Be that as it may, it seems that it has been Miyamoto, father of the plumber, who has ruled on the new games that would arrive, since, due to the opening of Super Nintendo World in Hollywood and with the movie yet to come, the Japanese creative has been interviewed by IGN, in which he has revealed that Nintendo has nothing to share around new Mario games. However, he did say that they are always working on a new Mario.
With these words, Miyamoto would be confirming that there is a new Mario in development, although to know the state in which it is located and if it will come out on Nintendo Switch or on its successor. Be that as it may, this statement would fit with the rumors that were leaked that Nintendo could be bringing forward the announcement of a sequel to Super Mario Odyssey.
In any case, we will have to be quite patient, since with this situation it is quite likely that we will see that no new Mario title will be announced until the release of The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom, since this is Nintendo’s main asset for this first half of the year and they will not want to take away any kind of prominence from it.
Six years without a new original Mario video game
Super Mario Odyssey is one of the best games in the platform saga.
On the other hand, it must be added that Mario’s desire to see something new is not accidental, since, taking a look at the newspaper library, we can see that since 2017 there is no original Super Mario gamebeing this Super Mario Odyssey, which became quite a bombshell that has already exceeded even 25 million units sold.
In contrast, it is true that in 2021 we had Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury, a title that, although it brought new content, was a Wii U port launched in 2013 and whose new experience could be completed in just a few hours. On the other hand, in 2021 we could also see that the Super Mario 3D All-Stars collection was launched on the market for the plumber’s anniversary, which, all told, was heavily criticized (and rightly so) due to the disastrous work of Nintendo, adding to this the fact of not adding Super Mario Galaxy 2.
We will have to see what the future holds for the most famous plumber in the video game industry, but it seems clear that either It will be one of the titles that closes the life of Nintendo Switch or we will see it in the next platform, which could launch in 2024 or 2025.
