Christopher Nolan is going for more and in his new film, Oppenheimer, he recreated an atomic bomb explosion without CGI. We tell you how he did it here!
The new movie of Christopher NolanOppenheimer, is a biopic that surprised many. And it is about robert oppenheimerone of the creators of the atomic bomb, key in the well-known manhattan project. Of course, and as you can imagine from the story it will tell, the atomic bomb will have an almost leading role. But in a recent interview Nolan confirmed that the explosion was not made by CGI, they recreated the explosion for practical effect.
“I think that recreating the Trinity test without the use of CGI was a great challenge to face”explained Nolan Recently. On the other hand, he commented: “Andrew Jackson, my visual effects supervisor joined the team early on. He was investigating how we could make many of the visual elements practical, from representing quantum dynamics and physics to the actual test trinity, going through recreate Poplars on a plateau of New Mexico with an extraordinary climate that we needed for the film. There were huge practical challenges”.
From what he commented, the team worked a lot on this explosion, which is one of the key points of the film. In case you don’t know what the story is about or what the test trinityDon’t worry, we’ll explain it to you. The official synopsis reveals that we will follow the story of the physicist J.Robert Oppenheimerwho worked with a team of scientists during the manhattan project. This took place during the Second World War and produced the first nuclear weapons, being USA the project leader.
During the Trinity Test was carried out, which is the first test of a nuclear weapon in the USA. The Monday July 16, 1945 was first tested in a remote area of alamogordoknown as White Sands. And the bomb that was tested is the one that was later used to bomb hiroshima Y nagasakiso that oppenheimer will show us a little of this history.
As for the type of biopic that Nolan presents, the director explained that it is very different from others of the genre. “It’s a story of immense dimension and scale and one of the most challenging projects I’ve ever faced in terms of scale and in terms of encompassing Oppenheimer’s vast history. There were huge logistical and practical challenges, but I had an extraordinary team that gave it their all. It’s going to take a while to get done, but as I see the results and assemble the film, I’m excited about what my team has been able to achieve.”.
Finally, the director assured us that it will be like another one of his films. That is, the point of view of the characters and time are two of the most important elements of the narrative. “We are trying to tell the story of a person’s life and personal journey through their personal story and on a larger scale. The subjectivity of the story is everything to me. We want to see these events through Oppenheimer’s eyes. And that was the challenge I proposed to cilliantake us through that journey”Nolan explained. “That was the challenge for Hoyte van Hoytema (Director of Photography), to my designer, to my entire team: how do we see this extraordinary story through the eyes of one person who was at its center? All of our decisions about how to make this movie were based on that premise.”
