Filled with positive reviews and with plenty of awards to come, Succession has come to a close revealing who gets to hold the power of Waystar RoyCo, ATN and the Logan Roy legacy. Read what Jesse Armstrong (the series creator) had to say about the ending here!
May 28 was the last Sunday with new episodes of succession, undoubtedly one of the best series of recent years. The popular and successful series of HBO came to an end after four seasons and 39 episodes that fascinated more than one and made us worry, swell and want? to a millionaire family that leaves a lot to be desired.
In episode 10 of the fourth and final season of successioncalled With Open Eyesthe series finally revealed to us who takes the power of Waystar RoyCo and who is in charge of succeeding the great Logan Roy. Needless to say, if you still haven’t seen the episode careful with spoilers that follow.
Thanks to a last minute change of heart, Shiv Roy (Sarah Snook) is the one that shakes everything during the tense vote in the boardroom. It seemed that everything was decided and that, once the deal was cancelled, his brother Kendall (Jeremy Strong) was going to stay on as CEO. However, nothing goes as it seems. GoJo bought the media company and its CEO, Lukas Matsson (Alexander Skarsgard)named neither more nor less than Tom Wambsgans (Matthew Macfadyen) as its American CEO.
Although in the episode the same Matsson makes it clear to us that the CEO role will likely involve a lot of dirty work with very little input, something with which Tom seems to be delighted, the idea that wambsgans whoever stays with this “power” is in the mind of Jesse Armstrong, creator of succession, for quite a while. What’s more, according to the showrunner, it was a natural choice.
“The idea of Tom whatever the eventual successor had been something I thought was the right ending for quite some time“, said Armstrong in the video Controlling the Narrative streaming service Max. “Although he is not exactly the most powerful monarch you will ever meet, his power comes from Matsson. Those figures who move up and go docile to powerful people are there.”
Besides this, Armstrong He also talked about the end of Roman (Kieran Culkin), Shiv and Kendall Roy and what you think the future will hold for you. “I thought of all their stories. They don’t end, they will continue. But it’s kind of where this show loses interest in them because they lost what they wanted, which was to be successful, which, you know, was this prize that their father offered them.”
On the one hand, and in a way “reductionist and grosshe”, Roman it ends exactly where it started, as explained by the showrunner. “He is that guy still. And maybe he could have just as easily been a playboy jerk with some nasty instincts and some pretty funny quips. He could have stayed in a bar, being that guy. And this has been a bit of a detour in his life, I would say.”
Shivon the other hand, can still move some pieces, since it is close to Tom and of the company. About this, Armstrong added: “It’s still up for grabs, I’d say, in a pretty scary, icy, emotionally barren place. But she has this kind of no win, no defeat. I mean, there’s going to be some movement there. There’s still a lot of that game left to play, but that’s where we left it. And it looks like it’s going to be hard for them to progress, emotionally, given the things they’ve said about each other.”
Last but not least we have kendall roywho for a brief moment of happiness was crowned the one to keep the company. “For KendallThis will never cease to be the central event of your life, the central days of your life, the central couple of years of your life.” said Armstrong and continued: “Maybe you could go ahead and start a company, or do something. But the chances of her achieving the kind of corporate status her father achieved are slim. And I think that will mark his whole life.
On top of all this, the creator, showrunner and executive producer of succession spoke about what it was like to end this great series and said that while it feels “very wicked to finish it”Since it was “incredibly significant” and loves the family atmosphere that was in the show, he puts as a priority “protect the program and its integrity”. He also added: “It feels really scary and silly to end it, but with that feeling that it must end. So that’s what, I guess, I’m holding on to.”
On the other hand, Mark Mylod, director and executive producer of successionalso talked about the end of the series and the beautiful scene in which we see a kind of family reconciliation between Shiv, Kendall and Roman at his mother’s house. ”That feeling of innocence recovered. Kids being kids, no matter what their income. Everything seemed possible and yet… My understanding of the show has always been that it is a tragedy. And so every hopeful moment like that is so cruel, because you’re waiting for their true natures to be exposed and for them to break your heart again.”
Mylod he also described the ending and the climactic showdown between the three brothers as “inevitable”. “The finale rips off the bandage to expose that terrible truth put so simply by Roman. It was such a heartbreaking moment. And yet so inevitable. It is the true essence of those characters and the consequence of their nature and upbringing. It all led to that moment. And so, on that level, it was perfect. It was perfectly painful.”
Now we can say that all the episodes and seasons of succession are available in HBO Max. It’s going to be hard to get used to not having more chapters every Sunday, but we have the option to start it all over again and see the Roy family as if it were the first time. And to you, what did you think of the end of this great series?
