An open debate about the effect that the publication of major titles on Game Pass may have has been taking place for some time among companies and users. Take Two questions the Game Pass release modelassuring that they do not believe that this business model could affect their way of publishing games. Now, Straus Zelnick leaves a wink interesting, when he assures that “our decisions are rational.”
In an interview with gamesindustry.biz, the CEO of Take Two has come on stage to talk about the situation of the publisher, now that the quarter of the current fiscal year is closing. And in this regard, the big circumstance that occupies the attention of many for the second half of the year, is the arrival of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 at launch on Game Pass.
Take Two questions Game Pass' release model, but doesn't feel threatened by Call of Duty's arrival on Game Pass
This aspect seems to have had an effect on Xbox's release plans, with the delay of Avowed. But it may also be an element that could affect third-party plans. This will not be the case for Take Two, as they assure that “it will not affect our decisions”, which Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 coming to Game Pass this October. He says that his plans are maintained because “our decisions are rational.” However, he evaluates much of the impact that this event seems to be having, pointing out that “Offering a top-tier title at a premium price on a subscription service, day and date, will push consumers to that subscription service“But for Zelnick, it would only do so “for at least a specified period of time.”
However, he doubts that this will lead to a change in consumer habits, who will continue to buy games that they want to play. It is the same old debate, the cannibalisation of sales that may be behind the problems that Microsoft seems to have with Xbox, is something that only those who have the official figures can answer. The rest can only evaluate from the outside the impact that the publication of games on that, and on any subscription service, may have on sales.
It's clear that Zelnick isn't thrilled with this business model, although we've seen that he doesn't shy away from it when he has the opportunity to make money by making one of his games available to one of them. When it comes to GTA V or Red Dead Redemption 2the amount that was discovered was not exactly something to be afraid of. But Zelnick has a different vision of how he would make something like this work, knowing that for now it does not pose any problem for Take Two's plans to continue on their course.
