First-person shooter XDefiant it was intended to compete with the established Call of Duty series. Ubisoft brought its biggest brands together and believed it could succeed. In the beginning, the game was not bad at all, but in the following months the interest gradually decreased. It is not the first time that speculation has spread about the possible end of development.
Shaun Weber started spreading the latest ones. He calls himself a developer who knows people. According to him, XDefiant is already dead, even though Ubisoft has tried to reverse the situation, asking testers for more tests and feedback.
“I've heard from multiple sources that it's possible the game will end support after season four if they can't get enough players,” reported by Shaun Weber.
Weber followed up on a report from Insider Gaming. According to this portal, the creators have two seasons to improve results. At the end of August/August, XDefiant had a maximum of 20k concurrent players across all platforms. This is simply not enough for a free game. Shortly after launch, the game reached 8 million registered players. Then the number increased to 11 million.
Producer Mark Rubin could not stand the multiplying assumptions. On his personal account on X, he denied reports of the end of XDefiant. “Literally since last week, I've been having meetings where we discuss our plans for second year of support” he wrote Ruby. In the meantime, they are focusing on improving the technical experience, including the network code, and adding more content in seasons three and four. These will bring new factions, weapons and maps.
Rubin notices the mistakes they made. He considers it the greatest lousy marketing. He admits the drop in player interest, but says the team has time to bring the game to a better state. Only then is more money invested in marketing to bring in new players and encourage the return of those who have left.
