Almost every post-apocalyptic series shows us zombies, infected or whatever has caused the end of society as we know it, but it is not what we have to worry about the most. Many times, the real threat is another human struggling to survive. This was made clear to us by episode 8 of The Last of Us, which is already available at HBO Max.
As we are going to recap the penultimate episode of the first season of the series, We warn you that there will be spoilers. So if you haven’t seen it yet, watch out. However, before we start talking about what we saw, let’s remember what happened two episodes ago. About to leave Eastern Colorado University, joel and Ellie they come across a group of what appeared to be marauders or raiders. joel he breaks the neck of one of them, the same one that seconds before had nailed something to his stomach.

We know how the story went on after that: Ellie leads to joel wounded to a house to treat him and recover, which is difficult without medicines and other hygiene products. However, episode 8 begins by showing us a different angle on what happened after that encounter.
In a small community of survivors in Colorado’s former Silver Lake resort, residents are not only concerned about a lack of food, but are also mourning the loss of a man who was killed while searching for food for his people. The leader of this group is David, a pastor who firmly believes that everything happens for a reason. “When we are in need, He will provide.”reads a sign they have in the dining room of the place.

David and his right hand James (interpreted by Troy Baker, Who voices Joel from the video game? The Last of Us), they are worried about how much food they have left and how long it will last. For this, they both decide to go hunting. However, despite saying that he only had a week’s supply of meat in his pantry, the episode shows how everyone gets a plate of “venison” at dinner before they go hunting. Some of the residents seem hesitant to eat it, but the hunger is stronger.
On the other hand we have joel already Ellie. Our protagonist is still injured and lying down, practically without moving and opening his eyes. Ellie he notices that the stomach wound is infected, that his protector is not getting better, and that they are running out of food. For this, she grabs the gun from joel and goes out looking for something to hunt.

Of course David and James They are with Ellie in the same forest She had shot a deer which the other two later find dead. With the idea of taking him away before whoever killed him arrives, David and James are under the watchful eye of Elliewho points the gun at them and asks them to move away. David He explains that his community is very hungry and that he is willing to exchange resources for the animal. After knowing that Ellie need medicine, James goes in search of penicillin to his community, while our protagonist and David They wait in a cabin.
David tells Ellie that, before the spread of the fungus, he wasn’t even a religious man, but a math professor, and that he ended up at ZC Pittsburgh afterwards. However, when the Fireflies toppled Phaedra in 2017, he and another group headed west, losing members along the way but gaining others. So until they get to where they are now. Everything seemed very normal, until David He starts saying that he doesn’t believe in luck and that everything happens for a reason. Because? He tells Ellie that a man recently murdered a member of his community and that, according to what they told him, that man was accompanied by a teenager. Seeing where he was going with the story (and with James pointing at him from behind), Ellie he grabs the penicillin and runs off.

Yes ok David He let her escape because he knows it wasn’t her who killed his man, the people don’t think the same. What’s more, a girl says that they should kill both of them and David Without hesitation, he slaps her on the face, leaving her on the floor. Despite this, the community leader sets up a group to keep track of Ellie and find joelwho is either dead or badly injured.
Ellieaware of what is coming, prepares for the men to come looking for them and leaves joel a knife so that he can defend himself. She gets on her horse to try to divert the hunters. When they find her, David He orders them not to kill her and to take her to her community. Some stay looking house by house until they find joelwho luckily was able to stop, attack and interrogate the men to tell him where they were holding Ellie.

we return to Elliewho is trapped in a cell under the eyes of David. He tries to get some information out of her, be it name, how and where she is joel, etc. However, true to form, Ellie He insults him and he doesn’t answer anything. Shortly after, our young protagonist is shocked to see a human ear on the floor (yes) and comes to the conclusion that these people are cannibals. David admits it and says that not everyone in the community knows, but they do it as “last resource”. Besides this, David He begins to tell him that human beings are animals and even praises the cordyceps because “secure their future with violence, if necessary.”
After telling Ellie that she reminded him of himself as a boy, because they are leaders, loyal and with “a violent heart“, Ellie breaks a finger Davidprovoking his anger and that (along with James) I took it out of the cage to cut it into pieces. Resourceful, our protagonist takes advantage of her immunity to the virus and tries to buy time by saying that she was infected. Between doubts if she was real or not, Ellie grab a knife, kill James and runs off.

While all this is happening, joel continues in search of the adolescent and pursues the traces of blood, which are from the horse of Ellie. Once in the community, the protagonist finds the horse’s body in a cold storage facility where they kept the food: three headless human corpses were hanging there.
Similar to the game mission that had you on the edge of your seat, Ellie is hidden in the community kitchen and, when she hears someone coming David, he throws a stick on fire, which causes the place to catch fire. Sneaking around the kitchen, tables and chairs, Ellie surprises David and stabs him in the stomach. He seems to be moved by her aggression and the violence of the situation, and when he finds her, he immobilizes her. Ellie against the ground, who fights to be free.

In an attempt to sexually assault her, Ellie he reaches for a knife and stabs him over and over again. With the building on fire, she runs out of the building and finds joelwho seeing the fear and shock on the face of EllieHe hugs her and says:it’s ok i got you”. After this, they both (bloodied and shocked) leave.
