Despite the fact that video games have been part of the culture for decades, many of the concepts of this medium are in English. One of these is “gamer”, which is used to define a member of this community. In this way, the Royal Spanish Academy has added a new list of words to its dictionary, and “video player” is already part of it. Through update 23.6, the RAE has added 3,152 new words to its dictionary, and one of these is “gamer”, a term that refers to all those who enjoy video games. This is the official definition: “Gamer, ra (From video- and player) m. and f. Person who plays video games, especially on a regular basis”. Although some may argue that “player” already fulfilled this function, now a clear distinction is made with the medium. Along with “video gamer”, the RAE also already recognizes the terms “cyberpunk”, “big data”, “micropatronage” and “programmed obsolescence”. On related topics, the Switch gets a new update. Similarly, Epic Games will have to pay a million-dollar fine for Fortnite.
Editor’s Note: Although it is good to see that these types of concepts already have an official definition, there are still many terms related to video games that do not have an official translation into our language. In the same way, it is very likely that “gamer” will continue to be the favorite option of many. Via: RAE The post The Royal Spanish Academy officially defines the “gamer” first appeared on Atomix.
