Alan Horn was not too convinced with Snyder's proposal about having Gerard Butler as the protagonist of the film, but the actor asked him for a meeting. During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Horn confessed what condition he gave to Gerard Butler before handing him the role of Leonidas. The executive stated:
I got a call from Gerard Butler, he said, “Can I come and see you?” So he came to see me and he was really physically imposing. I knew from The Phantom of the Opera that he smoked and I thought I could smell it on him. So I said, “Okay, you can have the part on one condition, you have to stop smoking.” He said, “Really?” and I said, “Yes. Give me your word and it's yours.” He said, “I give you my word.”
As a good industry veteran, Alan Horn still believed that movie stars should be an example to follow for all viewers, so smoking was not in the plans “get a clean image”.
