Creative Director of BioWare Studios, John Eplerrecently revealed in an interview with Edge magazine how the experience of developing the game Anthem have influenced the direction they are taking.
According to Epler, while working on Anthem's online multiplayer game, the team realized that BioWare should focus on what its real a strong point – telling stories and creating story-oriented RPGs for one player.
Epler admitted that while he was happy with many aspects of Anthem, the game wasn't right for BioWare. “We are a studio that has always been built on being deeply committed to storytelling and role-playing,” Epler stated. Although he had been involved in the development of Anthem for a year and a half, he felt that BioWare ventured into an area where it wasn't nearly as strongas in the case of its traditional RPGs.
According to Epler, an important lesson the team took away from Anthem's development is the realization that they should focus on what they do best. “Don't get too distracted. Don't try to do a bunch of different things that you don't have expertise in“ Epler added. He also emphasized that many members of the BioWare team came to the studio specifically to create story-driven single-player RPGs.
This approach is now fully reflected in development Dragon Age: The Veilguardwhich should be released this year. The exact release date has not yet been announced, but the creators should specify it later this month.
