Some of us might be lucky to have just 20Mbps of Internet speed, but that's not the idea behind tests conducted at Japan's National Institute of Information and Communications Technology. The association has managed to beat the world record for fastest internet speed.
As reported by PC Gamer, the figure has stopped at one 402 Tbps data transmission using the classic fiber optic cables that you may have at home. 50 kilometers of this material that can be obtained in specialized stores, together with the installation of signal amplifiers, allowed the 50.25 TB/s to be achieved. Therefore, we are talking about 25% more than the previous record that was set in October 2023.
The institute used all possible transmission bands, as well as the aforementioned amplifiers and gain equalizers, to achieve a bandwidth of 37.6 THz; or what is the same, more than 100,000 times higher than that available with Wi-Fi 7. To give you an idea, if you had this speed at home, you could download Baldur's Gate 3, Red Dead Redemption 2 and Fallout 4, at the same time, in less than a tenth of a second.
A crystal clear outlook for the gaming community, although it is impossible for anyone to have the infrastructure necessary to enjoy 400 Tbps at home. In addition, there is the problem of bottleneck in current PCsas it would require a motherboard, Ethernet port or RAM speed that are not currently on the market.
The limitation is that a computer, even a high-end one, is not capable of reading such a large amount of data in the required time. Of course it would be faster, but our equipment can work with a 1 Gbps fiber connection, not 412,000 Gbps.
