Despite going unnoticed by several fans of DC and superheroes, Shazam! Fury of the Gods It hit theaters last week and the reaction from critics and audiences alike differed quite a bit. As happened with so many other films, the sequel starring Zachary Levi It is receiving quite a few negative comments (which mark that it is childish or boring and that it does not get better than the first time) and many other positive ones (which celebrate its humor, action and cast). We tell you more below.
Despite the fact that the first film of Shazam! conquered more than one, received good reviews and gave fans of DC something new and different to see, its sequel seems not to be on the same path. The story of billy batson and his family in this second installment has accumulated in Rotten Tomatoes 52% from critics, but its score rises to 88% from the audience.
Before going on with the criticism, we remind you that Shazam! Fury of the Gods show how billy batson and her stepbrothers continue to learn to use their powers from the gods as they try to juggle their teenage lives with their superhero alter-egos. However, when the daughters of atlasa vengeful trio of ancient gods, come to Earth in search of magic stolen from them long ago, billy -alias Shazam– and his family find themselves embroiled in a battle for their superpowers, their lives, and the fate of their world.
Once again starring Zachary Levi and Asher Angel, The sequel features a cast made up of: Jack Dylan Grazer, Adam Brody, Ross Butler, Meagan Good, DJ Cotrona, Grace Caroline Fulton, Faithe Herman, Ian Chen, Jovan Armand, Marta Milans, Cooper Andrews, Djimon Hounsou, among others. Besides, Shazam! Fury of the Gods has as new additions to Helen Mirren, Lucy Liu, and Rachel Zegler.
The film is directed by David F. Sandberg and produced by peter safranwhile henry gayden and Chris Morgan they wrote the script. If you haven’t gone to see it yet, keep in mind that there are two post-credits scenes.
On the one hand, Thomas Floyd of Washington Post wrote: “Unfortunately, the new sequel proves an adage: lightning does not strike twice. Also, since CNN.com, Brian Lowry He said that everything that worked in the original doesn’t work as well in this sequel, which he described as “regular” and that mitigates even “the star power delivered by its high-profile villains”.
Following up on the negative reviews, Katie Walsh of Los Angeles Times gave the protagonist hard and even, since he wrote that the performance of Levi is what sends the film to the “stratosphere of shame“. Besides, Walsh said Shazam! Fury of the Gods is “The nail in the coffin of the fawning superhero.”
From The Daily Beast, Nick Schager wrote: “A sequel whose silliness extends not only to its pathetic humor but also to its convoluted and nonsensical plot, the film of David F. Sandberg is something like the light side equals the Black Adam. Messy and sad.”
William Bibbiani, of The Wrapsaid: “Shazam! 2019 still stands out as something special: an emotional, character-focused film with good humor and a real point to make that flashy spectacle never get in the way of telling a wonderful, personal story. Instead, the best parts of this new movie are drowned out by mindless CGI monsters and tedious action sequences. What worked before still works now, just now it has a lot of bland stuff in it.”
From THR, Frank Scheck wrote: “Like some kids who aren’t so cute anymore after they’ve grown up a bit, this sequel lacks much of its predecessor’s appeal. While the installment offers elaborate action sets, colorful villains, and the save-the-world plot mechanics expected of the comic book movie genre, some of the magic is missing… Shazam! They’re aimed at a younger comic book movie audience, but this seems more like Saturday morning cartoon territory.”
Getting into the most positive feedback, Chris Vognar, of rolling stonesremarked that the film is “fun, clever and well-conceived entertainment“, but “who doesn’t take himself too seriously”. From The Guardian, Peter Bradshaw wrote that Shazam 2 “it has a taste of orange juice straight out of the fridge that makes it pleasant.”
Sophie Butcher, of Empiredescribed the film as “bigger, weirder and almost funnier than the first”but also added that “is entertaining despite some tedious plots“. In the same way we have Rafer Guzmanof Newsdaywho wrote that the delivery may be good for children under 13, with a tone “attractive and carefree“, and “Levi He still has his chatterbox charm.”
From comicbook.com, Jamie Jirak said: “Shazam! Fury of the Gods It’s not the most unique or action-packed comic book movie out there. You certainly won’t leave the cinema as a fan of DC different, but you will leave with a smile on your face. If you can look beyond the uncertainty of the future of the family of Shazam, Fury of the Gods It’s an enchanting journey and a worthy sequel to the first film.”
Finally we have Kate Erbland of indiewirewho wrote: “While Shazam! Fury of the Gods It doesn’t fully recapture the fast-paced fun of the first film, its humor, sweetness and deliciously human heroes remain bright spots in a genre too often obsessed with darkness and grit.
As you will see there are many negative comments and many other positive ones. To see who we agree with we will have to watch the movie and draw our own conclusions. Shazam! Fury of the Gods It’s already in theaters.
