We well know that the character of Keanu Reeves He’s very good at action, but this time he has shown that he is short on words. John Wick: Chapter 4 shows us once again the wildest version of the protagonist of the saga throughout 169 minutes of shooting, blows and a lot of destruction. Of course, that duration is not particularly funny to the production editors.
As revealed by The Wall Street Journal, at that time the actor barely uttered 380 words in 103 different lines of dialogue. In fact, he speaks so little that when he does open his mouth it’s usually to say a single word. It’s not like John Wick was an excellent speaker in the first movie either, since he barely said 484 words.
The trailer contains 10% of the character’s dialogue, so he speaks in the two and a half minutes of promotional footage more than he does in the first 25 minutes of the film itself. The most surprising thing is that this decision comes from Reeves himself, in conjunction with director Chad Stahelski, since they cut about half of the dialogues that Wick had on the tape.
A sequence in which John Wick talks to the villain featured 50% of the lines for Keanu Reeves, but half were removed, so his responses are very brief. “When you work with him, it’s amazing how dedicated he is to not talking,” says co-writer Michael Finc.
From TWSJ they point out that Wick’s dialogue throughout the film is “You and I left behind a good life a long time ago, my friend”, which already gives us an idea of the eloquence he manifests. How can it be otherwise, all the energy Reeves saved by talking went into the brutal action scenes which is, after all, the reason why we pay a movie ticket to see the movie.
