He is now on his wayanother Czech indie game, this time focused on turn-based battles. In addition to a procedurally generated and fully destructible environment, you will also find over 40 different weapons that can be improved and their final effect adjusted. A student is behind the sci-fi thriller, which takes place on different planetsJakub Tomšůwhich has already released several gameson the platformitch.io.
Solar Storm it is not your first feature, but it is your first commercial project. So does that mean you're still working on it? Tell our readers how you manage or “don't manage” to devote to the project.
“Exactly. I am a student and will graduate this year. At the same time, I also have a part-time job, butI've taken a break for about the last month and I'm completely dedicated to Solar Storm. I've done all the other games in my spare time so it's nothing new. I really enjoy programming and developing games, so it's not a problem for me.”
So you chose the field of game development?
“I'm studying IT at an electrical engineering school, because I'm not only interested in game development, but also software development, hardware, etc. Apart from games, I'm also involved in game engine development and 3D graphics rendering, so I'm happy with a broader focus :).”
Where did your inspiration come from? While playing I couldn't help myself I remember the original Wormsyet I was pleasantly surprised by the variety of abilities such as tank teleportation through terrain, by the way, she surprised me at first with the enemy. Do you plan to continue developing the game after release, or do you want to move on to another project?
“My first inspiration was the game 1991's Scorched Earth, which was one of the first games in this genre. I first discovered this through a friend who is interested in retro games. We played it in several people via DOSBox and it was great. I was surprised how such an old and simple game could be so much fun. A few years ago I also tried Wormswhich is also a cult classic, but it was mainly about inspiration and I wanted to add new game mechanics to the game that would change the course of the game.
Among the main two innovations are mentioned teleportation and “projectile modes” (explosive, ricochet, piercing). Teleportation came about because I needed to give the players some way to move, but given that I programmed my own physics engineit was easier to make a teleport projectile than a traditional move like in Worms.
Projectile mods were originally fixed for each weapon, but then I wanted to add one weapon with multiple mods and thought the player could just choose which mod they wanted to use each turn. This added another layer of strategy and thus creates interesting moments when the player is attacked by an unexpected combination of weapons, mods and power-ups.
I plan to support Solar Storm even after release. I already have some ideas for the first content update. I would definitely like to move on to some other project as well, but I will definitely take the time to fix any bugs in Solar Storm.”
