We are still not out of our astonishment. He FPS that has broken the barriers between the virtual and the real has appeared, it’s called Unrecord and it promises an unprecedented graphic display in video games. There are those who have seen its presentation trailer and still doubt that we are dealing with a project created by a very small group of people. Therefore, we are going to tell you everything we know about the work.
Who are these geniuses?
Studios DRAMA is the name of the developer that was formed in 2020 and has this title as its main workhorse. Théo Hiribarne and Alexandre Spindler were primarily responsible for setting up the company three years ago and have been joined by Michele Evangelista. We are talking about an independent French studio, which has focused on various experimental games and prototypes that have never become as established as unrecorded.
Regarding the positions and background of each of the workers, we can reel their trajectories in the following way:
Theo Hiribarne
He holds the position of CEO of DRAMA, he is also a designer, a scriptwriter for the video game and stands out for being the main musician. We can hear some of his songs under the stage name Foda C, although he has also performed as a performer in the French production Memory Lane and in a music video called Columbine: Cache-Cache. In addition, he has made acrylic paintings such as self-portraits.
With the purpose of getting involved in creating unrecordedHiribarne has pointed out who puts his musical career on hold due to “vocal health issues, a greatly diminished passion for rapthe feeling that I have already spoken about myself and a logical desire to explore new, less personal topics through new challenges”.
Alexander Spindler
In Alexandre we can find the creative director and main programmer of the work. In his social networks he has periodically shared some of his experiments and tests, especially with the Unreal Engine graphics engine. unrecorded It is proof that his performance with the Epic Games tool is brutal, but he has also distinguished himself by some other achievement.
Has been especially skilled creating realistic smoke in EU, testing different systems so that it collides and propagates, just as it would happen in reality. You can use his creation for your own project. He has also been commissioned to create L’ombre des choses, a small game available on itch.io, which is about “a scuba diver at the bottom of the ocean who experiences a power outage. The goal is for him to restart his machine to avoid a disaster”.
Michele Evangelista
Michele is the level designer and stage artist for DRAMA. All the places we’ve seen so far, reminiscent of abandoned hospitals and dilapidated buildings, come from her mind. She has shared some of her previous works such as apocalyptic, cyberpunk and natural environments in Unreal Engine 4.
Milton Hjort
The fourth leg of the table, as Unrecord’s weapons don’t craft themselves. Sure enough, this Swedish 3D animator is in charge of creating the weapons that the protagonist of the game wears and the truth is that Milton has a lot of experience with it, if we review his work. He’s currently in a similar role at Mountaintop Studios as a junior animator, so there’s still plenty of room for him to unlock his potential.
The promise of realism on our screen
Now that we know who is behind it, it’s time to know what we will have in front of us when we can play unrecorded. DRAMA tells us about a single player FPS in which we will embody a police officer, but from the perspective of a chest camera. Despite what has been shown so far, the approach is to give great weight to the narrative part.
We will have to combine our tactical skills with our detective skills to solve a very complex crime. Unlike what we could see in the first gameplay a few months ago, dialogue options have now been added, which will clash head-on with the “hard moral dilemmas” to which we will have to face. That is, we will be facing “a story-driven experience with a strong focus on realism and immersion.”
The promise is that a good bunch of characters awaits us in the story and that the plot can be compared to that of “a police novel or suspense.” On the other hand, plot twists are more than guaranteed in Unrecord. What’s more, if you still aren’t sure what to expect, the description they themselves give is a mix between Firewatch and Ready Or Not.
The multiplayer is totally discarded, since they recognize from the study that investing efforts in this section would not allow achieving the necessary level of quality in the campaign. All this being developed in the aforementioned Unreal Engine 5, although for now we do not have the necessary requirements to play on PC. In DRAMA they point out that “we will optimize the game to ensure it runs smoothly in a wide range of systems.
Regarding the dizziness that can cause certain users when playing with this vision, the team is working on implementing different options to adjust the perspective and make it more comfortable to enjoy. Of course, they want to emphasize that the aim is not to reach an absurd level of realism and focus on that point, but that they understand it as “an integral part of the universe, so unrecorded It won’t be a simulation game.”
We are currently unable to purchase it, as the title is “in the early stages of development and production.” Of course, there is also no set release date and we should not be aware of possible special editions or reservations, at first. This may vary depending on the demand of the community, although it is expected that several betas of the work will be published in the future.
