Something that characterizes Terry Gilliam is that his films carry his unmistakable stamp, as we saw recently with Brazil, although he also has other great productions on his resume that are truly essential. It is undeniable that one of his greatest cult films is 12 Monkeys, so do not hesitate to give it a chance taking advantage of the fact that can be seen in streaming.
This magnificent work of science fiction was released almost 30 years ago and its plot takes us to a dystopian future in a time when humanity has been almost completely exterminated because of a terrible deadly virus. The few survivors are housed underground, including convict James Cole, played by Bruce Willis.
Inmates are given the ability to earn leniency, although this requires that they travel to the past in order to collect all possible information about the virus and thus find a way to prevent this catastrophe from happening. Supposedly, a terrorist organization known as the Army of the 12 Monkeys is behind this global massacre, so Cole must find those responsible as soon as possible.
The fact of saying that it is clear that Terry Gilliam is behind all this is due to the dark and surreal atmosphere in some moments that the film presents to us, with a somewhat satirical touch and sometimes with that point of humor so characteristic of their works. Maybe at first it can be a little confusing, but as the minutes go by the plot becomes more interesting and The two hours of the movie go by very quickly..
Without a doubt, one of the biggest reasons why this happens is due to the more than outstanding performance by its protagonists. Bruce Willis sets the bar very high, although the other great protagonist, Brad Pitt, does not fall short at all, which led him to be nominated for best supporting actor at the Oscars. And of course we must not forget the role of Madeleine Stowe who is not far behind at any time.
