Although the Fallout series has been under Bethesda Studios since the third part, in 2010 we got an exception in the form of New Vegas, which is the responsibility of the team from Obsidian Entertainment. For many players, this is the best Fallout ever made. According to Chris Avellon, co-founder of Obsidian, they should have offered their strength while working on other games from the Fallout and The Elder Scrolls universes. But Bethesda was against it.
In this way, Avellone proposed cooperation in the style of how it works now in the Call of Duty series. It wouldn’t be an annual release, but their games would fill a long gap between the releases of news that Bethesda is working on directly. From today’s perspective, he adds, with Elder Scrolls Online still running, it would no longer make sense. He also notes that he wasn’t surprised because never got the impression that Bethesda was happy with the reception of Fallout: New Vegas, which is very surprising. The title received an above-average rating from players and journalists.
We can only speculate about what such another spin-off for Fallout or The Elder Scrolls would look like. Avellone at least zoomed in on one of the plans. If this collaboration were to happen, and Bethesda didn’t want Obsidian to interfere too much with the lore of their fantasy world, the plan was to develop a story from an alternate reality of The Elder Scrolls where the hero failed to save it. The proposal is interesting, but unfortunately we will never see its result.
