harley quinn It needs no introduction, especially since actress Margot Robbie played the maniac in Suicide Squad (2016 and 2021) and in Birds of Prey. We do not forget the Rocksteady version in the Batman Arkham saga and more recently in Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League.
It was in Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of Harley Quinn where we saw Robbie play a Harley clearly separate from the Joker. James Gunn also exploited this idea in his version of the Suicide Squad (2021). This facet is not exclusive to movies. We've also seen her in comics, most recently in Harley Quinn #38 by Tini Howard and Natacha Bustos, available now.
- Warning: Harley Quinn #38 spoilers
In this comic, Harley is already disassociated from the Joker and decides to return to a couple of old elements after a conversation with Poison Ivy: her passion for criminal psychology, becoming a kind of advisor for villains, and her old harlequin costume. We are talking about a relic that she is 31 years old, when Harley debuted in episode 22 (The Joker's Favor, 1992) of Batman: The Animated Series.
Harley has turned what was once a symbol of the Joker, who corrupted her and distanced her from her intellectual aspirations, into a way to embrace those same passions once again.
This event carries great symbology, as indicated by ScreenRant, since Harley's harlequin costume usually resembles the period in which she was in the service of the Joker… and we already know what that relationship was like. It is an evolution of both the character and the costume itself, a way to make Harley's classic elements a little more independent from the Joker.
