There is no doubt that A death in the family became one of the canonical events of batman more transcendental for the character. It was in 1988 when the audience decided that Jason Todd should die at the hands of the joker and that tragedy marked Bruce Wayne forever.
It was not until Batman #428 of 2023 in its facsimile edition when we were able to enjoy an alternative story in which Robin survived his encounter with the killer clown. That issue will continue, as writer JM DeMatteis and artist Rick Leonardi will add a new chapter on July 10 under the name From the DC Vault: Death in the Family: Robin Lives! #1.
The plot will tell us what happened to Todd during and after escaping the clutches of death, as well as his elaborate revenge plan against the Joker. “This is a great opportunity to tell a story that's packed with action, but also dives deep into the minds of our main characters as we reflect on what would have happened if Jason Todd had survived the Joker's brutal attack. What about having a master like Rick Leonardi bringing it to life visually? I couldn't ask for anything more,” explains DeMatteis.
One of the challenges, according to Leonardi, is that “after people read it, perhaps this choice made at the time seems justifiedor maybe we'll see that it was a bad choice after all.” And Todd's death more than 25 years ago still stands as one of the most controversial events that have ever happened in the DC universe. From the DC Vault: Death in the Family: Robin Lives! #1 It has a cover made by the illustrator, but Mike Mignola has created a variant.
