Taking advantage of the success of Invincible, the Amazon Prime Video animated series based on the comic by Robert Kirkman, Ubisoft launched Invincible: Guarding the Globe; an RPG that we were testing on the Moto Edge 40.
Don't be intimidated
Invincible is now premiering its second season and follows the adventure of Mark Grayson, the Invincible hero who tries to lead a normal teenage life while saving the world from various threats.
Both the game, the series and the comic feature the Global Defense Agency, a government agency headed by Cecil Stedman. It controls all the disasters that occur on earth and is in charge of a group of heroes under the name of The Guardians of the Globe.
Ubisoft took advantage of this premise to create Invincible: Guarding the Globea squad-based role-playing game where we can assemble our own team of superheroes with a variety of well-known characters from history.
Like other similar RPGs (we analyze the Mortal Kombat: Onslaught) the story mode follows some of the events of the saga. We have a team of up to 5 members in an arena mode. Each scenario is a level of several chapters that are narrated by Cecil and other characters; while we try to stop the plans of current villains; like the Mauler twins.
The dialogues are in text and are shown in 2D drawings that closely respect the drawings of the series. Although the story works more as an excuse to give coherence to each battle.
As for combat. Once we choose our squad members and decide where to place them on stage; we start the battle. The heroes fight alone and our only interaction is pressing a special ability when a meter fills up. Upon finishing victoriously, they will give us rewards in the form of level points, resources or consumables.
This process is repeated over and over again. It is the classic model of the genre. It can feel a bit repetitive at first and simple. It starts to get complicated and the difficulty increases as we progress through the story. To achieve victory we have to level up the characters, place special items on them and keep the team level for each battle.
How do we get Omni-Man and other coveted characters? Enter Gacha mode into the adventure.
The gacha is a roulette of characters that change periodically and where with a special card we can unlock one of these characters. They are distinguished by rarities and roles. From the unique and common to the Elite. We can continue spinning the wheel until we get the one we want or using game coins that we can buy with a credit card. Although without using a single peso I have to confess that I got Omni-Man, Immortal and even Atom Eve.
I want more…
Beyond the campaign there are other activities that can be done in Invincible: Guarding the Globe to level up and get resources.
ADG and Alliance operations are used to choose heroes and send them on missions that are modified daily. The first ones work automatically and we only have to grab the resources when they end. Alliances are with other players as we face waves of enemies. There are also daily rewards and a battle pass called Agent's Path.
Invincible: Guarding the Globe It is not a demanding game but the amount of actions on the screen will require a mid-range device or above. We had no problems with the Moto Edge 40 and playing it for several hours we did not see a strong drain on the battery.
