Kittens, knitted blankets… A truly dreamy place. After making a more than worthy adaptation of the renowned WINGSPAN, Monster Couch took Calico and turned it into Quilts and Cats of Calico.
Revered be the cats
Quilts and Cats of Calico is a video game based on the Calico board game, which invites us to an adorable world of cats and fabrics of many colors and patterns. The objective? Make the perfect weave to be able to defeat whoever is in front of us (although sometimes we will compete with ourselves).
Although, like most board games, it is designed to be played competitively (either against friends, against random players – which we will talk about later – or against an AI), we are also given the possibility of Let's immerse ourselves in its campaign mode.
Its campaign mode (or, rather, story) invites us to immerse ourselves in a kind of adorable town where cats, basically, are masters and lords. Everyone worships cats. ALL. Honestly? I could live peacefully in that place: yes, I am a cat lady.
It should also be noted that the story mode has a much more interesting background than I expected, especially considering that “loneliness” is not exactly the soul of this title.
However, it does seek to provide an experience, both from the story itself and from the playability, that is really pleasant for those who do not have anyone to play with or simply do not want to get into the competitive part.
Unsheath your grandmother's needles
Quilts and Cats of Calico invites us to unsheath grandma's needles and become the best weavers. The game consists, on a large scale, of finishing sewing the quilt that plays the role of a board.
As? At first it may seem difficult – in fact, during the tutorial I felt really lost – but as the games progress, you get the hang of it without any major problems; It all depends on carefully analyzing the board, the colors, the patterns and the pieces that will come out next.
Basically, we will have a board/quilt with some pieces already laid out. There, we must place the Objective Mosaic pieces, which will then add points if they meet the requirements (color and shape).
The specific objective of each game usually varies, but sometimes it will be to score more points, other times to be able to call a certain number of cats (which usually ask for a specific number of patterns or a specific shape of them), or to get a certain number of pins (which are achieved by placing three equal colors next to each other). Also, a combination of several of the above points may be required to win.
The games change and increase in difficulty as we progress through the story.
Quilts and Cats presents us with constant new challenges that challenge our ability to analyze the board and each of our movements in detail; You have to be attentive and think carefully about each play.
The competitive mode
As I mentioned previously, Quilts… It can also be played competitively and this is another point that surprised me for the better. Right off the bat, I didn't expect to find people online wanting to play a competitive game, and there was! It seems to me to be a more than important point seen and considering the “real” basis of the game. Furthermore, in case a player is missing, simply add an AI and that's it.
But, if it is difficult to play a game “live”, you can select an asynchronous game, which gives you up to 72 hours to respond to your play.
THE STADIUM MUST BE CLOSED
There are two things that as a cat lady left me screaming at the love screen – and whoever is also a cat lady will understand the reasons. The first thing is that the title has a specific button that allows you to call the cats that are around you so that they can lie down on the quilt and thus be able to pet them; We have to close the stadium.
The second thing is that you can design your own cats. That is, if you have a “michi” as a pet, you can recreate it in this game so that it appears in one of the games. I repeat: the stadium must be closed.
What black magic do I have to do to live there?
Leaving aside the jokes (which really aren't so much), Quilts and Cats It is a completely adorable game from the graphical side. Actually the construction of your scenario (which is basically limited to being a board surrounded by cats) is a key point to calm the bad mood when a game does not go as desired.
No matter how much you lose, the constructed world is so warm, so welcoming, that it always seems to welcome you.
And the same thing happens from its sound section. Quilts and Cats It is a full-fledged cozy game (at least from these points of view). No matter the difficulty of the level, it always gives the feeling of waiting for us with a cup of coffee/tea (or the infusion of your choice), a blanket and a kitten purring at your feet.
THE BEST
- A more than faithful adaptation to the board game, but with more than necessary additions for the video game version.
- A truly welcoming world, which invites you to instantly want to be part of it.
WORST
- At first it may seem really difficult to understand, the tutorial can be a bit confusing.
